2011: The year of the 'Golden Rabbit'...

2011: the year of the “Golden Rabbit” – sources say that this will be a great year for my “Metal Monkey” (how fitting, considering my occupation) and I’m inclined to agree. Three new collections in the works, a potentially huge opportunity on the horizon and given of all the custom Bridal work I’ve taken on over the past 7 years, this year I’ll be designing custom Bridal dressings for two of the loveliest ladies. You see, I’m always requested to design one-of-a-kind pieces for wonderful women worldwide however, these two are something special: my phenomenal friend Debra, who happens to be an amazing photographer, mother of two, fellow Scorpio, friend of 17 years and a beauty of a bride-to-be and then there’s my whipsmart, hilarious and gorgeously unique friend of 24 years, Laura. To create a custom piece is in itself one of the most enjoyable aspects of my creative endeavors… to create custom pieces for such complex and original women, even more-so.

Although I’m most certainly not one to fall into the category of ‘pink, princess, bride’, I do adore bearing witness to the real-life love stories unfolding around me. People who, seemingly seamless in their compatibility, love and mutual respect for one another, deciding to commit in the most profound and deepest of ways. To be requested to take part in this, such a personal and significant experience which will shape the lives of these amazing people forever, is quite the honor and also, quite the inspiration. Two crazy/awesome ladies with wildly different sensibilities and very distinct and unique preferences will be adorned and supported by Harlow in Chains (and in these cases: Jeni Jaques) on the most important day of their lives. These two are personal, and I can dig it.

I’m nothing short of blessed in this arena. While I’m sifting and sorting through the endless stream of rubble in which I’m to find my inspiration for creating this year I won’t be lacking for it here, as these two lovelies are inspiration all on their own.

Spring’s on the horizon, and slowly but surely I’ve come to see that I’m lacking; in major ways… it’s not that I’ve been drifting along, unaware - I’m very much aware – it’s just that in actual fact, I’ve been ignoring that gnawing urge to start creating again. See, Harlow has absorbed all of my energy and since, my entire focus has shifted to accommodate it. I need to start painting again. I miss it more than I’ve ever allowed myself to realize. You see, I used to have a house; a house with a detached garage which I swiftly claimed as my studio space. I miss that space – so many nights when I’d rush home to head out there, close the rolling door, place a new piece atop my gifted antique architect’s drawing table, turn the music up and go. I had about 4 rows of shelving lining 3 of the 4 walls; cathedral ceilings and row upon row of paint: hundreds of cans of spraypaint, sorted by hue; timeworn silver coffee cans filled with caps (pink dots, gray dots), cans of interior and exterior paint, acrylics, latex, oils, watercolors; bottles and jars filled with colored pencils, brushes, knives (used to manipulate paint) charcoals and my favorite tool for illustration: my treasured collection of mechanical pencils. It was heaven. Reclaimed wood boards as canvas; acetate, tile.

I’d let go. Before I knew it, the sun would rise and I’d be covered in my precious cherry reds, custom-mixed teals, permanent marker – my hands and arms laced with precious cuts from using my straight razor for stencil work, proudly wearing the bruises I’d unknowingly accumulated on my arms from leaning at some impossible angle to get the perfectly imperfect shape. I loved it. I’ve never had a relationship with anything in this life that compares to the one I have with myself, my ‘art’. Whether a piece was ‘good’ wasn’t of consequence, as most creative types know that we’re our own worst enemies… it was the love affair I was having with my creative flow. Something about bringing form and color to life was addictive and I’d become transfixed.

I need to get ‘back to mine’. Painting, writing, music, design and creation in general – not limiting myself to Harlow. I used multiple mediums – yes, the paint work which was a tad ritualistic/therapeutic but also the graphic work, composition; I suppose my mindset was almost a kind of meditative state. Letting go, expressing whatever latent issues I had bumping around within, but then again this had always been my escape. Ever since I was old enough to hold anything – brush and pencil followed crayon closely.

I guess this could count as step #1; climbing the ladder in the upward direction of my happy and well-adjusted self. It’s my goal to start working again; not for the shows, the sales or the notoriety, but for me.

Series titiled "A Willesden Green Cabaret"... shot by Tiffany "Tippy" Rose Porter of Old Hollywood - only this doll could place my jewels in exactly the right light!

You see, the first time I met Tippy, it was to bring some Harlow goodies to her shop; she was going to sell them; that was supposed to be it! Well, add talks of David Bowie [all who know me KNOW - obsessed!], Labyrinth, all things vintage & antique, Michael Jackson; it was so surreal - like meeting my long-lost twin! She loved my work, I loved hers; we took to each other instantly - a bit narcissistic, seeing as we're similar to the point of surrealism here - and a wonderful friendship/business relationship began... ever since she's been making a home for my jewels, hairpieces and pretty things where they're happy, healthy and placed in the most beautiful of settings. Here's a small segment of a wonderful shoot she did, featuring one of my favorite necklaces - it's simple yet for some reason, I love it much more than any other piece I've created and she did it justice...

**The necklace featured is part of Harlow In Chains' "NuWave Glamour" Collection: Giant Antique Chandelier Crystal Drop w/Peridot Accent; solid, smooth Hematite Cabochon surrounded by channel-set rhinestones. Vintage Trifari gold-toned Links connect to another vintage silver rope chain by way of two 1940's vintage Square-cut Chandelier prisms [salvaged from a Czechoslovakian chandelier!]; long chain accents the back, or lays to the side of the neck ending w/a vintage Peridot Chandelier Octagon and completed with a solid 22kt Gold drop. [Accent piece shown to side in photos].

EF: "Jeni, we absolutely love your style... what inspires you to create these big, statement pieces?"

Jeni Jaques: "Thank you!! I’ve always loved art and creation in all forms: painting, illustration, sewing/fashion design & construction, writing, photography and in recent years constructing one-of-a-kind jewelry and accessories… I’ve also always had a love for older vintage and antique items and have been collecting those since I was a young child. I love the history, mystery and sense of wonder that each and every piece holds: ‘What kind of woman wore this brooch?’; ‘Was this locket a gift from a loved one?’; ‘Did it hold a special meaning?’; ‘What journey has this piece followed to end up in my hands, to use in part to create an entirely new piece?’ It’s mysterious and slightly haunting; I love that…"

January is busy, busy for Harlow In Chains...

Well, welcome to 2010! Harlow In Chains has a slew of new projects, collaborations, magazine shoots, photo shoots and 4 new collections in the works; over the next month or so, we'll have shoe jewelry, more of the 'Metal Collection', a spankin' new 'Brooks Collection' - saturated with color and glamour. I am well aware that there are some chintzy fringe necklaces out there, but @ HIC we're committed to excellence and each and every piece is lovingly hand-sewn and stitched to double-layered perfection! Up until now, the 'Brooks Collection' has been limited to red, black and ivory fringe but this year we'll have an amazing color palette - 2 separate color palettes to be exact - for you to choose from. Some will be muti-colored and others a solid deeply contrasted vibe; always glamorous though!
Many, Many more projects in the works, including more editorial shoots... All TBA. 2010 will be the year that Harlow In Chains goes full-force. Nothing's going to slow us down!! We're coming @ you - buy a little piece of history, mystery and uniquity and make yourself feel like a million bucks!!

This Month: HIC for sale @ Pepper Pastor Salon, NYC !!

Well, I know back in July of last year I'd initially placed a blurb in this blog about my pieces being sold @ the super-fun & swanky Pepper Pastor Salon in NYC, but it's happening this month!!

This salon is no ordinary salon, and no ordinary stylists will be found here... with friends such as Theo Kogan formerly of "the Lunachicks" {Saw them live back in 1996!! Always loved her rock & roll meets classical beauty and glamour...}, now of 'Theo and the Skyscrapers" and "Screen Test"; this space is home to a host of creative minds, talent and beauty with just a touch of the dark side. Harlow In Chains will be selling jewelry and hair accessories there starting this month, and I couldn't be happier!!

I mean, their opening reception featured a beautifully tiered grey and black cake with skulls artfully placed all over the entire cake! That definitely says a lot about this salon's attitude; again, the mix of galmour and a little bit of the dark side...Loving it!

The space, designed to cocoon clients in glamour, channels classic Hollywood with a dash of modern noir. Step foot in the salon and you’ll notice the care lavished on even the smallest details: wrought-iron art deco gates salvaged from decommissioned elevators divide the shampoo bowls, while in the foyer, clients perch on a late 19th century sofa reupholstered in sumptuous gold velvet damask.

With an outstanding portfolio, super-unique talent and an incredible atmosphere, I feel that Harlow & Pepper Pastor will fit together beautifully!! Fashion on The Roof: Runway Show @ Empire Hotel, NYC, UWS

November 23rd, 2009: Harlow In Chains & Lola's Rags came together once again to showcase our amazingly complementary lines on the rooftop of the Empire Hotel, on the Upper West Side, NYC. Funky beats, gorgeous models and of course, unique, one-of-a-kind jewels and hair accessories by Harlow In Chains and beautiful, vintage-inspired lingerie and evening wear by Lola's Rags!

The space was tremendous; like an indoor oasis and a turnout of 400+ *fabulous* people made the night absolutely amazing! The runway was about 60' in length and models had to turn corners, walk down stairs and pose for the 20+ photographers that were present to cover the event... the after-part was fantastic and the cocktails were just as fabulous!

This was a runway show to benefit children living with HIV/AIDS.

Well, summer's come and gone, and fall is when we start jazzing things up a bit: more focus falls on fashion, events, nightlife! It’s getting colder so we tend to stretch our creative side and express ourselves further when we dress... events, openings, shows, parties, galleries... the list goes on & on! In the meantime, Harlow's working on several new collections, starting with "the Metal Collection".

**’Metal Collection’ Vintage Draped Multi-Chain Collar Necklace**

This collection is slinky, sexy and created, of course, with 100% vintage and antique components. Some feature vintage and antique brooches, all are dripping in chains, featuring artfully draped chains, charms and accents… As always, no two pieces will be alike, and each piece is completely unique. Designed to accentuate the collarbone and chest area, or to add a bit of an edge to your LBD! These pieces are most certainly created to make a statement!

Well, summer's here and we're all going places... events, openings, shows, parties, the beach, BBQs... the list goes on & on! In the meantime, Harlow's coming out with a new collection:
"the Brooks Collection"

*'Brooks Collection" fringe necklace w/rhinestone & pearl detail on vintage open-link chain in Ruby fringe*

Inspired by Louise Brooks and all the other women of the fabulous and over-the-top 'flapper' era, the collection focuses on fringe, sparkle and decadence. As always, no two pieces will be alike, and each piece is completely hand-sewn. Designed to accentuate what you're already wearing, these necklaces will almost appear as if they're part of the dress!! I'm also creating pieces that can be worn either draping down the front, or to drape down and sway across the back - depending on what you're wearing... a nice, open, scoop-back top or dress would look fierce with some fringe swaying back and forth. Incorporating antique elements such as a deco-era dress or shoe clip here, an antique locket there {and of course, what would this homage be without some pearls thrown in the mix?}, these pieces are most certainly created to make a statement! Whether it be an urban DIY shoot on the streets of Brooklyn, or a beautiful antiqued indoor shoot - have your Uber-talented photographer friend set you up and shoot you like there's no tomorrow! I'm not looking for a family portrait here; I'm looking for your best, most creative, fun and artistic shots. So, if you've had any ideas bouncing around your head regarding a hot series or a dark, and alluring set of shots, now's the time to pull those out!!!

I need the pieces to be shown in all their glory, and since I know that you're all as lovely, unique and mysterious as the pieces I've created for you, jump in and come up with something amazing! Harlow In Chains has started a line of hair adornments as I can't get enough of feathers, rhinestones and the like. More is MORE!

Composed using a wide range of signed vintage findings, vintage beaded crystal clusters, Deco-era pieces, etc, prong-set Swarovski crystals, antique hat pins, hand-sewn and beaded pieces, vintage/antique feathers and silk flowers, these pieces are all one-of-a-kind.

These come attached to a heart-shaped felt {to be smooth and not tug on the hair} base and the hair combs are hand-sewn to ensure durability.

These pieces are currently available over @ Old Hollywood! I'll also have them for sale @ the Old Hollywood booth on Sunday, October 19^th...

Grab one of these babies and feel a little fancy.

If you'll be in the NYC area, come by and say hello, or bring your heirlooms to discuss a custom collaborative piece! You'll see tons of new HIC designs that will be exclusive to the market!

Spring is here! I can't stress enough just how glorious I feel come spring... new life, new fashion, estate sales and the like... all comes alive and everything seems to be full of hope and renewal. I'm currently flooded with inspiration and energy. Travel, excitement and limitless possibilities are on the horizon!

I decided to forgo Livejournal and attempt to house my ideas, inspirations, sneak-peeks of coming designs, collection ideas, etc all in one place.

New boutique opportunities are in place - some wonderfully unique shops are interested in housing my designs! I'll announce sales, promotions and new brick-and-mortar locations here, so check back often! At the moment, some Harlow In Chains pieces have found a home at the Sayville Antiques Center in Sayville, NY! Next time you're on the island, stop by!
